Borgir | Cities – Sigurborg Stefánsdóttir

Næstu vikur birtum við myndir af verkum á sýningunni JAÐARLAND / BORDERLAND sem stendur nú yfir í KCC Center for Book Arts í University of Southern Maine í Portland, Maine, í Bandaríkjunum.

In the coming weeks we will post photos and information on some of the works that are displayed at the current book art exhibition BORDERLAND in KCC Center for Book Arts at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine. We quote Sigurborg Stefánsdóttir on her work Cities:

Cities by Sigurborg Stefánsdóttir

“This book takes on the subject of man-made landscapes: cities, and many of the problems associated with them. Pollution, overcrowding, isolation and how despite human effort to stop this trend, have continued throughout the world. To create this book I have used mixed techniques. Only one example has been produced thus far.”

Early in February ARKIR met in a one-day-workshop with Danish book artist and designer Åse Eg Jørgensen, who is currently leading an artist residency program at Skaftfell Center for VIsual Art in Seyðisfjörður. This year’s thematic residency program in Skaftfell is “Printing Matter”, a three-week intensive program focusing on printmaking and artist book making. This is the second time Skaftfell arranges an artists book program with Åse Eg, who is one of the founders and possessor of the Danish experimental art magazine Pist Protta and Space Poetry Publishing.

ARKIR have been able to arrange short workshops with Åse in connection with her trips to Iceland, this year and in 2017. This time we did experiments with colors and prints from local vegetables, studied the notion of thread and repetition, patterns and natural colors. In January 2017 we had a two-days workshop studying letters and letterforms, see photos further below.

NANCY CAMPBELL

Gestakomur: Sem fyrr njótum við þess að hitta aðra bókverkalistamenn og skiptast á upplýsingum og skoðunum. Nancy Campbell dvaldi í Skriðuklaustri í haust sem leið og við hittum hana í Reykjavík að dvöldinni lokinni. Á Íslandi vann Nancy að bókinni The Library of Ice, þar sem hún fjallar m.a. um jökla á Íslandi. Við mælum eindregið með verkum hennar!

Visiting artists: We were so happy to meet Nancy Campbell again in Iceland! She had spent time at Skriðuklaustur in October and we met for lunch and a book chat at Helga Pálína’s house. While in Iceland Nancy explored the Vatnajökull National Park, and completed her non-fiction book The Library of Ice, which includes a chapter on Icelandic glaciers. We highly recommend her works – look out for her new book!

Summary of the Project: The “8th International Artist’s Books Triennial Vilnius 2018” is a unique non-commercial cultural project, organized to promote artist’s books, creators of artist’s books from all over the world, and to connect galleries, publishers, editors and printers of fine art & limited editions, the greater general public, collectors and individual artists.

It is an educational art project involving world-renowned artists to familiarise art teachers, students and general public with the interdisciplinary arts with the stunning variety of artistic disciplines in an artist’s book – and especially to stimulate creativity and love for books.

With the world-wide support of fine artists we continue our Project of the Artist’s Books Triennial Vilnius on the very best artistic level: Great Artists making a Great Exhibition!

The “International Artist’s Books Triennial Vilnius” is organized periodically since 1997. Over this period 1610 artists from 93 countries have submitted about 3000 artist’s books. Heimasíðan endurvakin! | Reviving the ARKIR blog!

Any news from ARKIR? It was a bit shocking to find out that our blog has been silent for an almost a year! Of course we blame our busy lives, but hopefully we can post more news in the months to come, even old ones! ARKIR are still busy working on book arts and multifarious visual arts, planning exhibitions and various projects. We’ll get back to that later!

But just to pick up where we left off a year ago we bring some photos from our last exhibition in Iceland, in September-October 2016: RE-BOOK in “The Old Hospital” Cultural Centre in Ísafjörður. Photos by Kristín Þóra Guðbjartsdóttir.

Um uppsetningu sýningarinnar á Ísafirði sáu þær Kristín Þóra, Inga og Svanborg.
